Hawaii Rapid Transit (HRT) employee. Eventually, other people were hired as the credit
union grew. When the credit union started, HRT helped the credit union out by donating $250 each
month to pay good dividends to members and to keep the credit union going. However, when Harry
Weinberg bought the company, the donations ceased and Weinberg started to charge the credit union rent.
Originally, the credit union was located in the corner of the Accounting Office on Alapai Street,
opposite the Alapai Street barn. In 1943, the credit union moved its location to the Alapai Street lobby,
later moving back to the Accounting office during strikes. It then moved to an office located on Kalakaua
Avenue between Beretania and Young streets, then later back to the accounting office, then across the
street (1133 Alapai) to the "pool room," and finally upstairs to the former Instruction Department.
In 1990, now known as Oahu Transit Services, Inc (OTS), OTS moved its location to 811 Middle
Street from previous Alapai Street where the credit union also relocated. During the transitions, the credit
union changed its name several times from HRTFCU to Mass Transit Line FCU back in 1983. Currently,
the credit union is known as OTS Employees Federal Credit Union. From the beginning of time the credit
union has dramatically changed from a plain vanilla credit union that provided only saving and loans to its
members to a full service products and services credit union. The credit union can provide you Individual
Retirement Accounts (IRA) to participation mortgage through our Credit Union Service Organization
(CUSO) to audio response via the credit unions’ Audio Response System. As the pendulum of time
change with regards to the innovation of technology, the credit union will eventually provide full service
internet banking. You wonder how time has changed! So, visit the credit union and experience these
changes.
